What is the FOP?
The Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) is a fraternal organization of police officers from all over the United States. The Grand Lodge represents all of the members. Each State has its own state lodge. The Local lodges choose the direction they wish to take their lodge.
What is required for membership in the FOP?
This varies from state to state, but generally you must be a police officer or retired police officer to join. Some states include other members such as police civilian employees as associate members, and Law Enforcement supporters as associates.
How long has the FOP been around?
Our local lodge was established in Sept 1977. The Grand Lodge has been around since 1915 when it was established by two officers from Fort Pitt, Pa who were upset over working conditions and wages.
What does the FOP do?
Each FOP lodge sets its own directions and goals. Many of our lodges are active, labor lodges and do the work of a union. Other lodges are strictly fraternal and are active in their communities. And there are other lodges, that do both of these…and more, Our lodge falls into this category!
What benefits do I gain from joining the FOP?
The benefits of joining our lodge are numerous. Over the years we have done many things for our members, the community and for our agencies. Social events such as our Holiday party is always well received. We have donated thousands of dollars to charities in the Northern Colorado area. We have supported department programs such as Santa Cops, and the Laramie River Rendezvous. And we have protected our members with our Legal Defense Fund. Colorado has been a leader in this type of program, and our program has been copied by numerous people. There are also discounts on home mortgages, rental cars, Auto insurance, purchasing cars, life insurance that are run by either the National, State or Local lodges!
Why should I join the FOP and not another police organization? The FOP is the largest police organization in the United States with over 320,000 members. We are the most active of all police organizations with members working legislation at the National level and conducting political endorsements. The Grand Lodge has the experience and expertise to deal with many issues. If they cant help you resolve it, they will come to you to assist in resolving the issues. In Colorado, we have over 4,500 members. Our lodge, is a multi-agency lodge and we have members from over 20 agencies, and nearly 575 members.
The FOP actually operates backwards from a union. The Grand Lodge dues are $6.50 per member per YEAR! That is 54 cents a month! Our State Lodge dues are $12.00 a member per year……$1.00/month! The rest stays with the local lodge. If you join lodge 3, you are automatically enrolled in the legal defense fund (excluding retired members) which is run by the State lodge and costs $13/month per member. Lodge 3 dues are $50/month for those whose agencies do collective bargaining and are represented by lodge 3, and $30/month for those who do not do collective bargaining. |
